From Compliance to Content: Jessica Ikhile’s Journey of Growth at Seamfix

Career growth doesn’t always mean moving up. Sometimes, it means discovering a completely different path.

Jessica Ikhile joined Seamfix as a Compliance Intern, grew into a full-time Compliance Associate, and then made an unexpected move into Digital Marketing, where she now works across content creation and social media management.

It’s a journey that has taken her from interpreting compliance requirements to telling stories and creating content for a digital audience. Along the way, she has had to learn new skills, embrace a different side of herself, and take a chance on a career path that looked very different from the one she started with.

We spoke with Jessica about making that transition, what gave her the confidence to pursue something new, and what her journey has taught her about growth, curiosity, and building a career that can evolve with you.

1. When you first joined Seamfix as a Compliance Intern, what did you imagine your career would look like?

“When I joined Seamfix as a Compliance Intern, I was focused on learning as much as I could about compliance and building a career in that space. At the time, I definitely wasn’t thinking that I would eventually work in digital marketing. Becoming a Compliance Associate felt like the natural next step, so looking at where I am today, my career has taken a direction I never really anticipated.”

2. At what point did you realise you were interested in content creation and digital marketing?

“The interest was already there in different ways, but I began paying more attention to it as I got opportunities to express my creative side. I found that I genuinely enjoyed thinking about how to communicate ideas, create content people would engage with, and tell stories differently. Eventually, I started wondering whether this was something I could actually pursue professionally rather than just something I enjoyed doing.”

3. Moving from Compliance to Marketing is quite a big shift. What gave you the confidence to actually make the transition?

“I don’t think there was a point where I suddenly felt completely ready. It was more about being willing to try. I knew I had a lot to learn, but I also knew that I was genuinely interested in the work. Having the opportunity to explore that interest within Seamfix made the transition feel possible. Sometimes you have to give yourself permission to be a beginner again.”

4. What was the hardest part of moving from a field you already understood into something completely different?

“The biggest adjustment was going from a role where I had already developed some confidence to one where I was learning so many things again. Digital marketing comes with a completely different way of thinking, from understanding audiences and platforms to creating content and measuring how it performs. It can be uncomfortable to go from knowing what you’re doing to asking basic questions again, but I’ve learned to embrace that.”

5. Are there skills from your Compliance background that you’ve surprisingly carried into your Marketing role?

“Definitely. Compliance taught me to pay attention to detail, think carefully about information, and understand the importance of communicating accurately. Those skills still matter in content. You have to think about what you’re saying, who you’re saying it to, and whether the message is clear. The roles might look completely different on the surface, but I haven’t left everything I learned in Compliance behind.”

6. What does your work look like today, and what do you enjoy most about it?

“Today, my work cuts across digital marketing, content creation, and social media management. I get to think about how Seamfix shows up online, how we turn ideas into content, and how we communicate with different audiences. What I enjoy most is seeing something move from an idea to an actual piece of content that people can see, engage with, and respond to.”

7. Is there a particular piece of content, campaign, or moment in your new role that made you think, “Yes, I can actually do this”?

“There have been a few moments where I’ve created something, seen the response to it, and realised how much I’ve grown since making the transition. Those moments are particularly meaningful because I’m still relatively new to this career path. Every successful piece of content or campaign gives me a little more confidence that I made the right decision to explore this side of myself.”

8. What has Seamfix’s role been in allowing you to explore a completely different career path?

“One thing I appreciate is having the opportunity to grow in a direction that wasn’t necessarily the path I started on. I joined in one function, became a full-time employee there, and was still able to explore another area where I felt I could contribute. Having that room to learn and evolve has been an important part of my journey.”

9. Looking back at Jessica the Compliance Intern and Jessica today, what do you think has changed the most?

“Probably my understanding of what a career is supposed to look like. Earlier, I thought you chose a path and kept progressing along it. Now, I realise that growth can also mean changing direction. I’m more comfortable exploring my interests, learning new things, and accepting that my career doesn’t have to follow a perfectly straight line.”

10. What would you say to someone who has built experience in one field but is considering starting again in another?

“I’d say don’t dismiss what you’ve already learned just because you’re changing careers. You aren’t necessarily starting from zero. You bring your experiences, discipline, perspective, and transferable skills with you. Be willing to learn, ask questions, and be uncomfortable for a while. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you take the first step.”

11. Finally, what are you excited to become next?

“I’m excited to keep developing my voice as a marketer and creator and to understand the craft at a much deeper level. I’ve already learned that my career can evolve in ways I didn’t plan for, so I’m less focused on having everything mapped out and more focused on continuing to learn, create, and see where that growth takes me.”
