It was a rough Monday morning, the kind that would leave one sulking all day, using all caps and exclamation marks to type, and maybe even screaming at random objects. First my alarm clock cuts into my dreams, reminding me that the weekend was gone for another five days. Next, the road was exceptionally jam packed as if the entire world had come out at once. I was having a bad case of the Mondays, so much so that I was already dreading the rest of the day. I looked at the time, 7:00 am, which meant I had 17 more hours to go. Great!!!
Fuming more than ever, I finally took the corner leading to the office and I brought out my phone to clock in to work. That was the first thing I was grateful for, that I wouldn’t have to queue up to sign the attendance sheet. I opened my iClocker app — the new ‘time and attendance software’ HR had just introduced that allows employees report to work simply by taking a selfie, smiling. I wasn’t in the mood to take a selfie, much less to smile, but it was expected of me so I did. The moment I flashed a smile, I felt everything change.
I had read in a journal that smiling activates the release of feel-good neurotransmitters in the brain that help to ward off stress, that happened in an instant. Suddenly, my day didn’t seem so bad at all. I walked to the office, still with that smile on my face, people that passed by me returned the smile and that made me even happier.
When I had settled down, I opened my login history on the app and saw my clock in time, 7:03 am, right there for my admin to see. My punctuality report was 100% and I smiled even more knowing that my bosses in the main office location could see my effort towards attendance, which would add up to my overall performance rating. My login history which also showed my clock out time meant that my overtime bonuses would be given as deserved. All of that meant I could be considered for a promotion, and because of the transparency, getting my off-day request would be a piece of cake. Soon, I was going about my entire day with an unwavering smile plastered on my face. My morning started as a complete mess, but the mood of my entire day had changed with just a smile and the knowledge that I was being seen.
We can’t always control what happens to us, but gracing our faces with a smile can change our internal and external experience and that of others around us.
